Want to commit? To your body?
Bring out the yoga mat, Boho Beautiful is on. Don't bring your wallet, it is free.
Long story short, when I was mapping out my purpose, the purpose of FOR MY SAKE!, the first question I answered was ‘What do you wish someone had told you when you started healing?”
Many of the recurring points merged into one takeaway:
We underestimated the importance of the body in the mind-body-soul approach.
We really genuinely do.
There are so many words, concepts and phrases that we overuse, and attach to thousands of situations that just do not fit the psychological understanding. As a result, we either use them for anything and everything (without truly understanding them) or we make them attractive (“I am not toxic, I am toxique.” Yes, that did happen in social media.)
Although this is something I rant about, deep down I strongly believe that the “mind-body-soul” connection is being discussed constantly without one thing - a profound focus on the body. Like, truly profound.
Yes, there are posts and publications on the nervous system and its physical manifestations.
Yes, there are discussions on anxiety and how it is contained in the body.
Yes, there are notes on how stress affects you.
Yes, yes, yes.
But no, there is not much further focus than “This is how it manifests in your body!”.
Firstly, ‘manifest(ation)’ is overused already, and dangerously so.
Secondly, the body is perceived merely as ‘a manifestation of (include mental health trouble)’.
The body is an active agent, a vital component of well-being.
The body is a loud messenger that you need to listen to and consciously work with.
The body regulates neurotransmitters, chemicals that affect your mood regulation, and your responses.
The body is the driver of inflammation, the mental health is in the passenger seat.
The body, particularly the gut, is referred to as a ‘second brain’ - your gut microbiome is linked to better mental health.
The body’s deficiencies actively influence your mental health.
The activity of the body is the natural way of accessing the release of ‘happy’ neurotransmitters.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
(and refer to this beautiful illustration of Morgan Harper Nichols).
